Formulator Job Summary

This position reports directly to the President and Vice President. The Scientific Formulator will be responsible for overseeing the formulations utilized in the manufacture of all soft chews, tablets, liquids and 3rd party manufactured products. This position works closely with the other formulation scientists and directs projects for the contract chemists.

Responsibilities :

  • Provides high technical expertise and leadership on multiple projects
  • Provides product specifications and cost estimates
  • Works with ingredients vendors in sourcing new materials based on needed specifications
  • Plans projects, develops timetables, and provides interim status reports to the President and CEO as well as the Vice President of Marketing.
  • Works closely with Marketing, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality and other key positions
  • Works closely with the production crew during project development, scale-up, and launch
  • Assist when needed during the evaluation, approval or rejection of all procedures, specifications, test methods and results that impact the purity, quality, and composition of an ingredient or product
  • Assists when needed in performing internal audits
  • Assists when needed in approving raw material suppliers, contract manufacturers, and contract laboratories
  • Is the primary liaison with contract testing laboratories
  • When necessary, assists the Regulatory Manager on technical and product questions.
  • Assists in the review of adherence to strict procedures for the maintenance of production equipment that ensures all equipment performs accurately and orders corrective action when required
  • Writes and reviews SOPs for the in-house lab and assists in writing SOPs for other areas of the plant
  • Ensures in-house lab adheres to SOPs and cGMPs
  • Assists the Quality Control Manager with Root Cause Analysis, CAPAs, OOS, Deviations, and writing SOPs.
  • Supervision of Laboratory Personnel in coordination with QC Manager to ensure adherence to SOPs and cGMPs

Essential functions:

  • Stays current with new science and technology
  • Provides technical expertise and communicates technical progress for assigned projects
  • Plans, organizes, and leads experiments in pilot plant, plant trials, and commercialization
  • Creates and maintains formulations, specifications, processes, and testing procedures
  • Records, compiles, and analyzes test results and writes reports
  • Understands product cost drivers and opportunities for improvements


  • Master degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, or related field
  • Bachelor degree is acceptable depending on experience
  • Familiarity with tablet, liquid, and powder formulation and manufacturing is a plus
  • Familiar with cGMP
  • Experience and knowledge in health & nutrition, natural ingredients, and current food trends. Pet food or supplement experience is a plus
  • Good understanding of production and process scale up
  • Ability to develop and execute action plans for each project including experimental design, plant trials and commercialization
  • Ability to evaluate and utilize technical information from internal and external sources
  • Ability to Lead development and implementation of key product improvements, productivity initiatives, new products, and line extensions
  • Ability to work with suppliers to identify technical solutions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organization and communication skills and computer literacy
  • Ability to mentor and interact with the junior technical professionals in the group
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds on an occasional basis
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision
